Electrolysis in power-2-gas plant

Instrumentation and systems for hydrogen applications

There are various technological processes for water electrolysis. The three processes of electrolysis relevant for power to gas are alkaline water electrolysis with a liquid basic electrolyte, acidic or polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis using a polymeric solid electrolyte and high temperature water vapour electrolysis with a solid oxide acting as the electrolyte. In alkaline electrolysis and PEM electrolysis, a distinction must be made between atmospheric and pressure electrolysis. The advantages of pressure electrolysis are the more compact design and the possibility of direct coupling to many industrial pressure-controlled applications as well as the natural gas infrastructure.

KROHNE instrumentation has been involved in today’s hydrogen projects from production via transportation as well as its storage and use. Hydrogen is an important key in the energy transition but unlike other gases much more difficult to handle and to control. Hydrogen is highly explosive, can diffuse through metal and seals, and causes material embrittlement. KROHNE is experienced in supplying instrumentation for such hydrogen applications and has a proven track record in this industry. ALTOSONIC V12 is an ultrasonic custody transfer flow meter, designed according to MI-002, and calibrated for hydrogen: this has been applied in hydrogen pipeline metering. OPTIMASS 6400 Coriolis mass flow meter and OPTISONIC 7300 ultrasonic gas flow meters for on plant process measurement of hydrogen flows. OPTIBAR DP 7060 DP transmitters with gold coated diaphragm process seals suitable for hydrogen pressure measurement up to 700 bar.
